LS Mtron Ltd. announced the release of large cylindrical ultracapacitors that can be applied to hybrid automobiles, wind turbines, UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), and so forth.
Unlike existing cells with prismatic design, this newly launched product features a cylindrical exterior and the terminals have been separately arranged in both directions. The ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) of the product, one of the key characteristics of an ultracapacitor, is very low (below 0.26 m ohm for a 3000F product). This product is designed to effectively control a rise in internal pressure by adopting the safety release vent system whose performance has been well proved in prismatic cells.
Large ultracapacitors over 1000F have been widely used for such purposes as energy and output compensation through the regenerative braking of hybrid buses and heavy duty vehicles, pitch control systems of wind turbines, and reactive power compensation in semiconductor lines, where accurate power quality is required. However, with the supply of varying types of products from different manufacturers, large ultracapacitors are less compatible with each other, and have limitations for substitutes of those products selected in their early development stages. Providing the same level of performance, cylindrical shape cells are expected to overcome design limitation and expand to a variety of applications for the module assembly. With the exterior dimensions compactly designed, these products allow for remarkable compatibility with competing products and a high level of customer satisfaction.
Therefore, the upcoming release of large cylindrical ultracapacitors will be able to respond to the demand of customers for products with different exterior designs, yet with the same performance and quality.
This new type of ultracapacitor is expected to be actively used by end-users who have different technical requirements using prismatic cells. LS Mtron will distribute mainly 2.7V 2000F and 2.7V 3000F products to accommodate customer demands in 2010.
