This patent license agreement grants wind turbine manufacturers the rights to use an ultracapacitor as the uninterruptible power source of a wind turbine, which employs an electrical pitch control system.
Generally, ultracapacitor has been recognized as the reliable energy source which has long cycle life and stability among most engineers in the wind power generator and UPS field but many of the wind turbine suppliers have not been able to acquire rights to this patent and actively apply ultracapacitors to their systems.
Through this agreement, wind turbine manufacturers can use LS Mtron ultracapacitors for their blade pitch control systems according to their own needs, and do not have to worry about patent infringement.
LS Mtron is expected to lead the advancement of similar types of electrical wind turbines around the world and contribute to the extensive application of ultracapacitors.To meet various market needs, LS Mtron developed 2.8V products using the highest voltage in 2005 and extended product lines from medium to large sizes cells (100F, 120F, 350F, 1000F, 1700F, and 3000F) and modules in 2007.
Those products were named LSUC® and verified the excellence of their performances through the evaluation test by many clients including Enercon.
Additionally, LSUC® acquired quality and environmental certifications, such as UL, ISO/TS 16949, ISO14001, OHSAS18001, and ROHS, and focused on catering to customers’ quality needs.
What is Blade Pitch Control?
A blade pitch control unit alters the rotational angle of the blades of a propeller according to the wind speed to improve generation efficiency and protect the wind turbine.
To enhance the efficiency and for safety of blades, ultracapacitors can be used as a backup power source during the operation of a pitch control motor.
